Hebrews

Chapter 1 ( Jesus is above Angels)

Verse Annotation

Verse 1      God speaks to us directly through Jesus

Verse 7-9Jesus has been given more power than the angels, a name above every other name, sitting at the                         right hand of God, Ruling with a scepter of righteousness.

Verse 12  Jesus is always the same unaffected by time, consistent in character, ruling in eternity.

Verse 14  Jesus is not simply a ministering spirit but the only begotten son of God whom is our only path to                         salvation.

Reflection

We worship the son of God, not a mere ministering spirit, not a mere prophet, not a mere Angel but the one who sits at the right Hand of God ruling his Kingdom with the scepter of righteousness. Our confidence as Christians should come from this knowledge. Our God is sovereign, ruling in eternity unaffected by time. He knows everything we go through and He understands every pain we go through.

As much as it seems lucrative to rely on our own strength and workmanship, let us rely on Jesus, who rules in eternity, has sovereign power over everything we go through. On our own strength we cannot and do not have the ability to please God, but through the Grace and Mercy of God we are able to come to Him through faith in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ; a faith that goes beyond salvation, one that affects all areas of our lives, not just our walk with Him, but our careers, families, professions and daily life.

Prayer

Jesus thank you for sacrificing yourself on the cross and paying my debts. Help me to walk in awareness of your sovereign power, that is higher than the angels. Jesus help me to put my trust and faith in you; not just faith for my salvation but faith that you are my provider, healer and redeemer ever present in every area and season of my life

In Jesus name I pray, Amen

Chapter 2 ( Salvation through Jesus)

Verse Annotation

Verse 1 - Obedience and understanding of scripture is key as without obedience to scripture our

natural tendency is to drift away from God’s Word.

Verse 2 -     No one receives injustice from God

Verse 11 - Jesus Christ guides us to the main source of life ( God)

Verse 14 - Jesus understands in totality everything we go through as He experienced it in order to

destroy the power of death and pay for our sins

Verse 15 - without Jesus Christ we would all be eternal slaves without hope.

Verse 16 - The work of God was targeted not to Angels but to us ( God sees us from all eternity )

Verse 18 -  Jesus helps us through temptation, more so as one who was tempted himself

Reflection

We have been offered a gift we did not deserve, a gift of mercy, a gift of grace and a gift of faith. We have been offered salvation by Jesus Christ, a saving that rescues us from our eternal damnation of slavery to the flesh, the world and the Devil. Jesus Christ rescued us who were completely dead in sin and gave us “life and life in abundance”. How can we trade that for short-term satisfaction, a satisfaction that is merely a drop in the ocean of time.

Jesus Christ knows our struggles, he knows what we are able to take and He will never give us more than we can bear. He helps us as one who has experienced the pinnacle of temptation and stood firm on the Word of God. It is important to always reflect and put into practice the things God reveals to you, whether God spoke through silent prayer and meditation, directly from HIs word or even though those around you. Immediate obedience to the word of God helps us to fight our natural inclinations and not to drift from God’s Word

Prayer

Thank you God for giving me Your Word, may it be a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. Give me the strength to obey your word immediately, give me the strength and courage to put that which you reveal to me in practice. Help me to seek your face daily and create a fire for the things of God in my heart. Teach me to always call upon your name whenever am feeling out numbered or tempted beyond measure, because I know you are always there with me.

In Jesus name I pray, Amen

Chapter 3 ( Faith is Paramount)

Verse Annotation

Verse 8 - May God work ins our hearts that we may obey his voice and not harden our hearts to it

Verse 11 - Reveal to us God, the places we have disobeyed you time after time and forgive us, we want to enter in your presence

Verse 12 - A heart that lacks faith in God will always lead to disobedience and the eventual falling away from God

Verse 13 - We are called to encourage each other daily in faith, we do not know what someone is going through but the continues encouragement removes the deceitfulness of sin

Verse 14 - we cannot give up midway in our journey with Christ, we have to go all the way in order to share in Christ.

Verse 19 - Faith is crucial to our walk with God

Reflection

Faith is paramount in our christian lifestyle and our walk with god. It is impossible to fulfill the commands of God without faith in Him and faith in His Word. A rebellious heart gets incubated once we start living our lives without faith in God. The Chapter reminds of Moses and the Israelites, they were rescued from Egypt by God. This same people who had seen great signs and wonders during their time in Egypt and even in the wilderness came to a point where they lacked faith in God. They grieved the heart of God and sinned daily.

The Israelites did two things which a lot of Christians now find themselves in. They became familiar with the miraculous nature of God and lost the awe of it. There is always a danger when we become too familiar with the things of God, this always leads us to thinks that God is not that much of a big deal and can easily make us rebellious to His word. Second, the Israelites did not trust in God’s promises and started trying to give God a hand. Some even went was far as building there own Golden Calf to worship. We are Calle dot always have faith in God and His Word, whether our life circumstances reflect it or not. Faith in God is a nonnegotiable to the health of a Christian

Prayer

God, I thank you for rescuing me from death, rescuing me even when I was rebellious and a son of disobedience. Jesus I pray that you may help my unbelief, increase my faith in you, that I might be able to do as you command. Jesus I pray that you may help me to trust to your voice, promises and direction for my life. Your word says God that our will bring to completion every good work that you have begun, so that is my prayer God, bring to completion every work that you have begun in my life. I have faith in you and trust you Jesus with everything.

In Jesus name I pray, Amen

Chapter 4 ( Obedience through Faith)

Verse Annotation

Verse 2 - We can hear the word but just like the sower, the word can dead in us when not acted upon with faith

Verse 6 - Our own will can become a hinderance to God’s word, causing us to disobey

Verse 7 - God help us not to harden our hearts to you word and voice whether its through people or for something we completely can’t see

Verse 12 - There is nothing with more authority, moral stock than the word of God

Reflection

Many times; if not all times, our will leads us into the path of darkness. We have been conditioned by culture into this self rule way of life. Truth is whether we obey or decide not to, God will still remain sovereign. The only change here will be our absence from His Kingdom and presence. As humans we do not have capacity to exist without the intervention of God. Any time we want to test this out, the cost will be greatly felt by us.

Our obedience to God is not just an empty Yes, but should be accompanied with faith. the Bible talks about Faith that can move mountains, faith that is placed on God’s fulfilled promises and also His new promises to each one of us. Hardening our hearts whether consciously or subconsciously will only lead to lack of faith, frustration and finally a-strayed by the things of God. Let us desire to obey, trust and have faith in God fully as that will lead us closer and closer to presence

Prayer

Jesus I thank you for giving me life today and working in my heart daily. Even now that am able to think about you I just know it is by Your grace and mercies; it is definitely not something I did or excelled in. God I pray that you may help me to obey Your word daily, for Father it is my prayer to enter Your rest, Your presence and Your Kingdom. Help me not to harden my heart to you, but that I may be thrilled and excited daily to hear and immediately act upon your word.

In Jesus name I pray, Amen

Chapter 5 ( Sent by God)

Verse Annotation

Verse 1 - We are to be High Priests of our families, working places, businesses, Friendships and Relationships; to represent those who do not know God before God and to represent God to them.

Verse 3 - Even as we serve God we are called to have evaluate and pray for forgiveness of our sins.

Verse 4 - We do not call ourselves into service for God but only God calls us to it, we do not send out selves.

Verse 14 - God help us to grow in discernment, that we may be able to distinguish good from evil.

Reflection

Who sent you ? This is a very important question we as Christians ought to ask ourselves. We cannot be found lacking, operating in an area where God has not sent us. When we are sent by god He sends us with resources and skills necessary to accomplish His will, the opposite is true if we send ourselves. We are called to be representatives in every area God has sent us, be it in out families, schools, friendships or relationships. God calls us to be salt, to be a reflection of Him.

This is why we do not call ourselves into ministry, it is only God who calls us. He not only sends us but desires for us to grow even us we are working in service for Him. It important to constantly track the voice of God just as the Israelites did with the pillar of fire and Cloud. God does not want us to be stagnant in faith but just like Jesus, God desires us to grow deeper in Him as we function as His representatives to others. In all this it is important to always take moments to pause and reflect on our personal walk with God making sure we do not just focus on execution of commands but the health of our spiritual life. Let us ask for forgiveness where we need to and give thanks where we need to.

Prayer

God, it is my prayer that you may send me, send me with the resources I need, equip me with all that I require to fulfill your will in my life. Jesus I pray for favor with those you have placed around me, that their hearts would be open to hear your voice and your guidance. I pray God that you may make me an effective High Priest, help me to represent you accurately and to bring honor to your Kingdom. I pray for daily growth in my walk with you, that I may grow deeper in you, even as I do different things. Help me not to be stagnant in faith.

In Jesus name I pray, Amen

Chapter 6 ( Unchangeable God)

Verse Annotation

Verse 10 - God Is very much involved in the work we do for him, applauding, directing and correcting us where it is warranted by Him

Verse 11 - Our conviction of the things of God ought to remain sincere full of hope till the very end, in order for us not to be lazy but inherit the kingdom of God through faith and patience

Verse 18 - God’s promises are guaranteed, He will always finish the good work He has begun in us

Reflection

Through different situation and occurrences in our lives, am sure most of us have been able to know what hills “you can die on”. This is to say what are your nonnegotiable beliefs, philosophy’s and doctrines. This is very important for us. As Christians we are called to hold onto the commands, decrees and the promises of God. We do not have any wiggle room for negotiation with the flesh, we ourselves are products of mercy, privilege and love from God. Am sure we can all agree that we never want our loved ones or those who care about us to suffer, but truth is, we often grieve Jesus Christ.

The good news though is, we are not journeying the walk of faith by our own strength, we have the Holy Spirit in us, directing us. Our prayer should be for the increase of the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives. We desperately need His direction, protection, comfort and power. Only through reliance on Him can we journey steadfastly to the end. We are called to uphold our first love, not to grow weary through dead convictions but to continue earnestly, seeking the will & presence of God.

Prayer

God I thank you for the love, patience and kindness you have shown me, even when I did not deserve it. Jesus I declare you are my chief cornerstone; you are my firm foundation. It is my prayer that my whole life may be built open you, I need your help Holy Spirit, I need your presence in my life. I open my heart & my mind you; I pray that you may take over and have your way in me. Direct me Jesus Christ, direct my life, direct my career, and my social life as well. Help me to walk in awareness of the certainty of your promises in my life.

In Jesus name I pray, Amen

Chapter 7 ( Jesus! Our Perfect High Priest)

Verse Annotation

Verse 22 - Jesus is our guarantor of our covenant with God, not us/our strength or works

Verse 25 - Jesus is our Priest, saving us to the uttermost; interceding for us before God

Verse 28 - How gave us a better High Priest, one who has been made perfect forever

Reflection

I can’t even imagine what it would be like without Jesus. The chapter gives us a good summary of the duties of a priest during the days of Aaron and Melchizedek. They needed to offer up sacrifices, not only for themselves but also for the ones they were interceding for. This is vastly different with Jesus, who is our Chief High Priest, He gave up himself; his life, for us. He has been made perfect forever by God. He intercedes for us before God and represents God before Us.

God gave us the best advocate in the business, one who fully understands our pains, and struggles, one who knows everything about you and me, one who sees all of our needs and hears us when we call. What else can we ask for? why must our flesh wage war with such a blessing to our life? We have to be strong and courages, we must will our flesh, our behaviors, our attitudes and our desires to be those that are pleasing to God. We ought to constantly, without fail, believe in Jesus Christ and seek God daily us He continues to renew our mind ( Romans 12:2)

Prayer

Jesus, what a blessing you are to me! You are an undeserved gift and presence in my life. Lord I pray for strength to do that which you commend me to do, strength to fulfill your desires for my life, strength to come to you with an open heart, strength to acknowledge my mistakes and errors. I pray that you may fill my spirit with hunger and thirst for you God. Even though my flesh wages war and I may sometimes fail, I long to please you daily. Give me the strength to show you just how much I love you Jesus.

In Jesus name I pray, Amen

Chapter 8 ( The New Covenant)

Verse Annotation

Verse 2 - We did not set up our salvation, we did not seek him first. Jesus came to us first; worked by the direct hand of God.

Verse 7 - Jesus made the perfect covenant, enacted on better promises ( Old promises - Moses enacting his tent as God commanded )

Verse 9 - We broke the first covenant God had with us, but now our High Priest is one better than us and represent us fully to God as well as God fully to us.

Verse 10 - In the new Covenant the law was moved from text and stone to our minds and hearts.

Verse 11 - God shows no bias in his selection of who knows Him. He has made it available to the least of us all the way to the greatest

Reflection

It is such a relieve that we serve a God who came to us first; he worked in our hearts even before we knew we needed Him. He created a new covenant that has better promises; a covenant in which He will remember our sins no more, a covenant in which our High Priest is perfect and flawless, a covenant in which all of us know God, whether we are young or old, rich or poor. What kind of love is this ? that we who broke the first covenant with God are given a new covenant with an even better High Priest. So much mercy, grace and love from our God.

Even though we are now in the new covenant it is very easy to feel guilty of our sins and past errors even after we have asked for forgiveness and have been forgiven. Many believers experience the same, the important thing to keep in mind is that God; our Father, is not like humans who lie and are inconsistent in Character. Even though it is hard, we need to refrain from letting our emotions dictate what we believe and what we do not. Our emotions are the most inconsistent thing out there, but God is the most reliable consistent and dependable. Let us walk in this new covenant with boldness and courage knowing that we are sons of God, fully loved and adopted in Christ Jesus.

Prayer

Thank you Jesus for your love for me, I thank you for always looking out for me even when I did not notice it, thank you for helping me out even when I had completely given in. I pray that you may give me boldness and courage to walk in confidence in this new Covenant with you. I need you to survive. I pray may your laws be in my mind and written in my heart. I pray that my default heart posture will be pleasing to you, I pray for strength to starve any patterns that I had formed that are not pleasing to you, strength to walk in purity, strength to believe in your forgiveness even though my emotions say otherwise.

In Jesus name I pray, Amen

Chapter 9 ( Greater Sacrifice)

Verse Annotation

Verse 14 - Unlike the Priest in the first covenant who had to offer sacrifices for his sins first before he offers the sins of others, our Chief Priest is perfect.

Verse 14 - The blood of Christ is much more powerful than the blood of the goats and animals. He offered himself as The was perfect an did not need to sacrifice blood for His sins.

Verse 15 - only through Christ o we receive eternal inheritance

Verse 23 - the sacrifice of Christ did much more than a sacrifice would in the first covenant, His sacrifice put sin to death once and for all

Reflection

Is there a better savior we could have asked for ? Jesus our Chief High Priest; perfect in all ways, sacrificed himself for us.

Our lives should be lived in complete submission to him and the marvelous new covenant that we have with God. One who has been rescued from death ought to live in a way that does not put him in the same situation that was impaling him.

Jesus is our perfect savior, we ought to live according to His ways. We have long tried our own paths, but to no avail. We have tried being the masterminds of our own life, but to no avail. “The Clay (Us) will never know its purpose apart from the porter (God).

Prayer

All creation bows at Your feet Almighty God; ruler of heaven and earth. Help me to always hold you in reverence. I do not want to grow numb to the wonder of Your goodness and presence in my life. I need you Jesus, I need You to help me seek You daily just ass the deer seeks the water. Help me not to go back o the old ways You saved see from, but to always grow in the understanding of You, that my relationship with you will always grow deeper and I will grow in favor with You and man.

In Jesus name I pray, Amen

Chapter 10 ( Truth Itself)

Verse Annotation

Verse 1 - the law was a pointer to the truth; it could not perfect those who sacrifices daily, Jesus Christ is Truth himself

Verse 4 - Only Jesus can take away our sins not the blood of bulls and goats

Verse 14 - through one offering Christ perfected all who believe in Him

Verse 22 - We are called to walk in the Kingdom with a great assurance of faith. WE HAVE BEEN MADE A LIVE, Washed as white as snow

Verse 29 - Sin makes the blood of covenant a common thing and is an insult to the spirit of grace ( Neither of which we deserve)

Verse 31 - Woe to those who fall into the vengeance of God

Verse 35 - Walk in boldness

Verse 38 - God does not delight in the righteous who shrink back, we are called to live by faith

Verse 39 - We must journey all the way to the end

Reflection

The Theologian Martin Luther was famous for his preoccupation with guilt, even as a student at seminary he understood the inadequacies of the old covenant and its practices. Martin Luther had come to crossroads, he wanted to live in righteousness but kept failing. To add on this he was very much aware of his sin and mistakes. He could only get relief from confessing to the Priest at Seminary, but that was insufficient. Immediately Martin would finish his long confessions, he would feel a burden of his shoulders with the priests words “You are forgiven”. All this joy would be quenched once he would remember of a sin he had not confessed, no matter how small.

Martin Luther was conscious of something that humans and even christians struggle with unconsciously. The question is, What do we do with our guilt? This is a question all humans should ask themselves. For Martin Luther as well as all Christians out there the answer is found in Hebrews 10:38, Habakuk 2:4, Galatians 2:!1 and Romans 1:17 . “The righteous shall live by faith”. This faith unlike the old covenant is pointed at Truth itself; Jesus Christ, not a mirror or reflection of Truth.

Prayer

Jesus I pray that you may enable and help me to walk in boldness, even as I enter the Holies of Holies daily, I pray that You may help me to walk in full assurance of faith in you, just as you command me to in your word. God I pray that you may strengthen me even in battles with the flesh, devil and the world. I pray for strength to not shrink back from the fullness, purity, righteousness and inheritance of Your Kingdom my God. I pray for a daily awareness and reality of my faith in You and Your amazing work in my life.

In Jesus name I pray, Amen

Chapter 11 ( Through Faith, By Faith)

Verse Annotation

Verse 1 - We believers are a people of hope, we have conviction ( the knowing of things not seen )

Verse 3 - Without faith the creation of the universe can never be understood. Creation was brought into being by a being outside creation; there is no way creation could have created itself, it would have had to be and not be at the same time.

Verse 6 - It is impossible to please God without faith; you have to believe that God is

Verse 16 - Let us keep longing for a country, home and nation that is better than here; The Kingdom of God, which He has prepared for us

Verse 34 - God makes us strong even in our weakness

Reflection

There is nothing here in earth that does not have a genesis of faith. All creation is an act of faith in the word, power and character of God. This is a faith that is joined together with “The Knowledge of”. Nothing on Earth could create what is on earth, all of this must have come from another being outside the powers and limitations of earth. We are also reminded the stories of key people in the Bible who were closely related to the Israelites and lineage of Jesus. We see that this people lived through faith, Abraham, Moses and Joseph all acted upon faith. Through this faith filled acts we see the coming of Jesus later on.

This is the God we serve, one who is sovereign, powerful, unchangeable, immutable and inerrant. We are daily privileged to be his sons and daughters. We are daily privileged to be welcomed into His Kingdom and take part in the workings of His plans.

There is nothing that God cannot do. This calls us to live a life filled with faith in Him, faith in who He is, faith that He is and faith in His word

Prayer

Thank you Jesus for choosing to partner with me in the workings of the Kingdom, thank you God for bringing me onboard through faith, mercies and grace. God I pray for strength to walk in faithful manner, give me the strength to live out my life in full faith in who You are, full faith in Your word and full faith in You. I pray that you may be my firm foundation so that even if trials come and things shake around me, I will not be moved.

In Jesus name I pray, Amen

Chapter 12 ( Live in Righteousness)

Verse Annotation

Verse 1 - In order for us to run this race towards the finish we ned to put away every excess luggage in our life. We have become storage units of burdensome knowledge and philosophies of life.

Verse 2 - Our gaze even in crisis should always be aimed at Jesus

Verse 4 - We should never give into temptation, especially when we do it voluntarily.

Verse 5 - There will be moments God’s word will correct us, our response should be to act in obedience

Verse 6 - God cares so much for us that he desires for us to live in holiness as well

Verse 16 - Let us not be like Esau who sold his birthright, let us hold firmly our sonship in the kingdom of God.

Verse 27 - Our foundation has to be in Jesus, a firm ground that cannot be shaken.

Reflection

We are sons and daughters in the kingdom of God. Even though we are existing here on earth right now, our kingdom is eternal. We must function in that reality; the reality of the eternal. Each of us has been bestowed upon mandates by God, what He desires us to do, where He wants us to Go and how to use our passions and desires. We cannot exchange our immortal life for mortal sin.

Esau is the perfect example of someone who traded his life for a short lived satisfaction. Many of the temptations we experience come down to this one factor, Do I love the things of God more than the immediate pleasures of men. Small sins like lying and cheating can fester into a cancerous pandemic of relative morality we see today. Let us live in righteousness and run with focus the race set before us

Prayer

You are an amazing God, gracious to me and those I love. Holy Spirit help me to live a holy life, it is my hearts desire to live a life that is consistent with you word. I pray that my behavior at my office, home, church may be a reflection of your righteousness. Give me the strength to not trade my eternity and sonship with non valuable character, attitudes, Habits and hobbies. Help me to please you daily.

In Jesus name I pray, Amen

Chapter 13 ( Eternal Pursuit)

Verse Annotation

Verse 2 - Let us be hospitable us Christians, we never know who we are interacting with. May god give us wisdom and discernment

Verse 5 - Satisfaction of the now, is a satisfaction that will not reach eternity

Verse 6 - God is our rock and firm foundation, we do not fear any institution, situation or man.

Verse 9 - We also must have a personal relationship with God in order not to be carried away by false teachings.

Verse 15 - Our speech should always bring glory to God

Reflection

One of the growing philosophies right now is secularism. The core of this belief is the seeking of immediate pleasure, what is pleasing to me now, how do I feel now?As Christians we bear a call to live in awareness and reaction to eternity. What we say must be justified by the laws of God who reigns in eternity. Our experiences and hardships here must be tackled with the confidence and peace of our God who reigns in eternity.

Many times we know wha we need to do; we know the right thing, but we do not do it even though we know it to be the right thing. Our fallen flesh has a default routing to seek what is pleasurable now, what decisions, conversation, purchases or entertainment. Good news for us is Jesus Christ rose from the grave, with that we who believe in Him as our Lord and Savior are free indeed. We walk in boldest into the new that Jesus has given to us. We walk in new desires, behaviors, schedules, entertainment, friendships and decisions. Our old flesh is dead, we now live in the new with Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit our helper.

Prayer

Thank you Jesus for dying for my sins, thank you God for sacrificing you only sons for me. I pray that you may give me the strength to do the right thing that you have revealed to me to be right. Give me the strength to obey your commandments even if the do not grant me pleasurable moments. Help me to walk in the awareness of eternity, that my gaze will not be on my current circumstances but on you. Sanctify my lips, renew my thoughts that I may be pure through and through. I pray that you may take away and remove any memory and desire that is not of you in my body.

In Jesus name I pray, Amen
